St. John's College has grown from the former De La Salle school, which had been run by the De La Salle Brothers from its foundation in Cardiff in 1935, until their hand over to a lay charitable trust in 1987. In 1995, the school took possession of its superb Grade II listed building set in landscaped grounds in the conservation area of Old St. Mellons.

The Fox and Hounds is a mixture of traditional and contemporary. It is open plan with wood beams, log stacks into the wall and comfortable seating areas.

The village playing field is owned by the Old St. Mellons Community Council. It has two tennis courts and a children's play area.
